爱丁堡 (Edinburgh，苏格兰盖尔语拼法为但尼丁Dùn Éideann )是英国苏格兰的首府，也是续格拉斯哥后苏格兰的第二大城市。爱丁堡位于苏格兰东海岸福斯湾南岸，北纬55°57', 西经3°11' 。1995年被联合国教科文组织列为世界文化遗产。截止到2001年统计人口为448,624人，占地面积264 平方公里。
爱丁堡也是英国的一个重要旅游城市，每年吸引约1300万名游客。每年8月份，爱丁堡举办世界闻名的爱丁堡国际艺术节(Edinburgh International Festival)，项目包括戏剧、电影、舞蹈和音乐。在艺术节的同期间，爱丁堡城堡前也举行爱丁堡军操表演(The Edinburgh Tattoo)。
名称
爱丁堡的名称来源于公元6世纪中叶不列颠人的国王克利农·爱丁，意思是爱丁的要塞，7世纪时，英格兰北部盎格魯-薩克遜人建立的国家诺森伯兰征服了这个地区，用他们国王爱德温的名字将这个地区改为英文名称，意思是爱德温的城堡。
由于其古老的建筑和19世纪新古典主义兴盛时期，聚集在这里的作家、评论家、出版家、教师、医生和科学家形成具有世界影响的学术精英，所以爱丁堡也被称为“北方的雅典”。爱丁堡的气候阴霾多雨雪，也被称为“老雾都”(盖尔语"Auld Reekie")。
市区
爱丁堡的市区被“亲王街公园”绿地分隔为两部分，南部是老城，建于1329年，城堡山上的爱丁堡城堡最早建于6世纪，但目前存在的最早建筑是城堡内11世纪建造的小教堂；北部是1767年市议会批准开始建造的新城。亲王街公园是1816年由沼泽地改造的，此地最早原是一个湖—“北湖”（Nor'Loch）。
前寒武纪时，火山喷发，造成玄武岩地壳，第四纪时的冰川将表面沉积层扫荡一空，裸露出坚硬的玄武岩石，城堡山因此成为一个天然的屏障，从古以来，这里就是要塞，公元6世纪时曾有一首古诗描述勇士们在“爱丁的大厅”中欢宴的情景。据悉“亚瑟王”传说的作者可能采纳了这首古诗描述的情景来描述亚瑟王及其圆桌骑士团的宴会。
老城
老城的轴心街道是“皇家英里街（Royal Mile）”，西端起自城堡，东端是圣路德奥古斯丁教堂，横向的小街道叫“死胡同”(wynds)和英里街横向交叉，像鱼刺一样，城堡好象鱼头。
1700年时老城有8万人口，但现在只有4千人居住在老城，1436年爱丁堡成为苏格兰的首都，老城城墙是1513年建成的，1824年爱丁堡发生大火灾，许多老建筑被烧毁。2002年12月7日老城的“牛门俱乐部”又发生一起大火，大火烧毁了邻近的爱丁堡大学信息学系和图书馆。
新城
爱丁堡新城始建于18世纪，以便缓和当时日渐拥挤的旧城。新城在1765年到约1850年间分几个阶段来承建，城内还保留着许多18世纪带有新古典主義风格的建筑和城市布局。

空路
爱丁堡国际机场 位于市中心西部8英里处, 在A8公路路线上, 是通往爱丁堡的主要国际门户。此机场由英国机场管理局(BAA plc)经营。在 1991年，超过200万搭客使用该机场。目前，有巴士服务来往机场和市中心的爱丁堡威佛里火车站(Edinburgh Waverley railway station)。
铁路
爱丁堡威佛里火车站是英国东海岸铁道主干线(East Coast Main Line)的北部终点站。GNER和Virgin Trains的火车服务由这里通往英国南部城镇，First Scotrail的火车服务则通往苏格兰境内的城镇。
